tan|a|ger «TAN uh juhr», noun.
any one of various small American songbirds related to the finches. Tanagers usually have brilliant plumage. The scarlet tanager, the summer tanager, the hepatic tanager, and the western or Louisiana tanager of North America are four of the kinds that comprise the tanager family.
